Frequently Asked Questions

When is the season?

The season starts in April, and ends sometime in late May.

Does Metro participate in a league or have in-house teams?

Metro Lacrosse is a member of the G.O.A.L (Gateway Outdoor Amateur Lacrosse). G.O.A.L is a league that formed in 2005 and brought together a lot of other leagues to play against each other.  Our 3rd and 4th grade division is an in-house division with teams that play each other.  If there are other 3rd and 4th grade teams in the area we will play together.

What ages are the kids?

Metro Lacrosse serves kids from 3rd grade to 8th grade. The divisions are broken down based on age and grade level.  There are 3 divisions, 3rd and  4th grade, 5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade.

What areas do the kids come from?

Metro Lacrosse mainly has players from all over the St. Louis area.  We will not reject any player from any other area.  We have had many players from (Parkway schools, Incarnate Word, CPOP, MICDS, Prior, Clayton School District, Ladue School District, Principia, Chesterfield Day School, St. CLare, Holy Infant, Andrews Academy, College School, St. Joseph, Oak Vill, Whitfield, J. Burroughs, Gateway Academy, etc.)

Is Lacrosse a contact sport?

Yes.  Lacrosse is a full contact sport but at each age level we will be fielding teams to provide an environment where children can learn the skills of the game with little or no contact.

What equipment do we need?

On the boys side of the game, each player is required to have a lacrosse helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, arm pads, a mouthpiece, cleats, cup, and a lacrosse stick is also required. Hockey Helmets are permissible, but they do not provide the protection the lacrosse helmet would. Rib protectors are optional.

On the girls side of the game, each player is required to have lacrosse goggles, mouthpiece, and a lacrosse stick is also required.

Does Metro Lacrosse provide equipment?

All equipment is the responsibility of the player. A jersey will be provided to each player as part of their registration fee. There will be a starter package of equipment available at a discount price from our equipment supplier at registration.

How many kids play for the Metro Lacrosse?

Metro started in 2003  with 75 children, both boys and girls. In 2004 we had over 150 kids playing and in 2005 we almost had 200 kids, and 2006 we reached 295 kids.  It is hard to say how many players we will have each year, the sport of lacrosse only seems to increase.  We do have to stop at a certain amount due to space.

Where do the kids play?

We have our main fields location at Maryland Heights Sport port Complex.  All the age groups practice and play their games at Sportport Complex.

How often do the kids practice and play?

We practice 1-2 nights a week, mostly on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30p.m. to 8p.m, and have one or two games per week on Sunday (TBD).

Is everyone assigned a team?  How are the teams assigned?

Teams will be assigned in Late March and changes will be made if necessary, the first week of practice.  The 3rd and 4th grade division are divided into teams that are as equally balanced as possible. The 5th and 6th grade and 7th and 8th grade divisions are divided based on skill level and are entered into the league at different levels based on skill. If a player is placed on a wrong team the coach will place the player and a respective team.  If a player wants to play with another group of player please specify that on the registration form and we will make necessary changes.

Can my child participate in another spring sport and still play Lacrosse?

We have many players that participate in multiple sports, and where it is OK to miss some practices or even a few games.  One of the biggest ideas that we talk about with the players is practicing out of practice, that is something we encourage the players to do the make them better.

What is the game like?

Lacrosse is a fast moving game played on a field similar to a Soccer field. There are on average 10 children and a goalie on the field for each team at one time. The ball is passed, using a stick, from player to player with the intention of scoring on a net guarded by a goalie.  Please see the link in this website called The Game and it will explain in more detail the different parts of the game.

How can my child join Metro Lacrosse?

We hold registration once a year for the spring season only. The registration is announced on this web site, and flyers are distributed to the elementary schools and middle schools.  Returning players are also notified of registration via an e-mail. Registration was already held, but please sign up for our mailing list or contact us.  Registration this year is held Tuesday February 6th at 7pm at Parkway Central High School Foyer.

What if I still have questions?

If you still have questions that are not answered on this web site, send us an e-mail to metrolacrosse@yahoo.com.  If it is a common question we will add it to our FAQ's list.
